The BSC and the Institute of Science and Theatre launch the CREARTE project: artistic creation for the dissemination of science.

The Department of Earth Sciences and the Computational Social Sciences Program of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) are working closely with the Institute of Science and Theatre (INCITE) to validate a new methodology for co-creating scientific theatre, under the CREARTE project.

The goal of this innovative project is to create a play about climate change science, where the work of climate researchers, social scientists, and artists is combined. The co-creative process and the implemented co-creation methodology are intended to be extrapolated to other thematic areas of interest and serve as an example in the development of artistic creation for science dissemination.

In the first phase of the project, the collection and analysis of qualitative data has been completed. In this phase, the artists carried out an ethnographic immersion process in the Earth Sciences Department at BSC, interviewing several researchers and participating in focus groups to delve into different subtopics of climate change.

Currently, the creative process is focused on defining the themes and subthemes of the play. To this end, in dynamic co-creation sessions, researchers and artists are evaluating, selecting, and diving deeper into the themes that emerged from the focus groups.

Soon, the third phase of dramaturgy will begin to create the theatrical text. In this way, the fourth phase, the production of the scientific play, will take place between April and May 2025.

The scientific play aims to enrich the dissemination of how science is done and what it means to tackle a problem scientifically, by observing scientists in their real context. The general public will learn how climate change researchers currently conduct their scientific research and how this process has evolved from a historical perspective.

The premiere of the play, the exact place and date of which will be announced soon, is expected to take place in June 2025.

The CREARTE project is being developed in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.
