We are launching the CREARTE project with great enthusiasm, in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.

Under the CREARTE project, the Earth Sciences Department and the Computational Social Sciences Program at the BSC are working closely with the Institute of Science and Theater (INCITE) to validate a new methodology for co-creating scientific theater.

Goal? To create a play about the science of climate change, combining the work of climate researchers, social scientists, and artists. The co-creative process and the implemented co-creation methodology aim to be extrapolated to other areas of interest and serve as an example in developing artistic creations for science dissemination.

We have completed the first phase of qualitative data collection and analysis, during which artists immersed themselves ethnographically in the Earth Sciences Department, conducted interviews with several researchers, and participated in focus groups to delve into different subtopics of climate change.

We are now in the middle of the creative process, defining the themes and subthemes of the play. Through dynamic co-creation sessions, researchers and artists are evaluating, selecting, and exploring the themes that emerged in the focus groups.

Soon, we will begin the third phase of playwriting to create the theatrical script.

The fourth phase of producing the scientific play will take place between April and May 2025.

The scientific play aims to enhance outreach by showing how science is done and what it means to tackle a problem scientifically, observing scientists in their real context. The general public will learn how climate change researchers conduct their scientific investigations today and how this process has evolved from a historical perspective.

The premiere is scheduled for June 2025.
